Italian astronaut to share experiences of historic missions at Space Park Leicester

An Italian Air Force astronaut will share his insights from ground-breaking space missions during a special visit to Space Park Leicester.

Colonel Walter Villadei was the Commander of Italy’s first commercial suborbital research flight, the Virtute 1 mission, and was the Pilot for Axiom Mission 3, the first all-European commercial astronaut mission to the International Space Station.

Space Park Conversations, 3pm Tuesday, 11 February

He will visit Space Park Leicester – the University of Leicester’s £100 million science and innovation park – on February 10 and 11 to tour its world class facilities and give a keynote talk exploring Italy’s role in commercial space exploration.

Space Park Leicester Academic Liaison for Commercial and Innovation Dr Francesca Faedi said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Col Villadei and to have the opportunity to hear him talk about his extensive experience in the space sector, including his involvement in the Virtute 1 mission with Virgin Galactic and the Axiom Mission 3 to the International Space Station.

“Moreover, his insights and perspectives on Italy’s Aeronautica Militare strategic vision for future commercial space endeavours offer a unique opportunity for collaboration and knowledge exchange.

“We’ve no doubt his visit will inspire our community and pave the way for potential partnerships that will further advance innovation and excellence in the space sector.”

Col Villadei’s keynote presentation will take place during Space Park Conversations at 3pm on Tuesday, February 11, and will be immediately followed by Cosmic Coffee, Space Park Leicester’s community network event.

Lessons from Virtute 1 and Axiom Mission 3

The talk is called ‘From Earth to Orbit: Lessons from Virtute 1 and Axiom Mission 3. Opportunities and risks for Italy and Europe within new commercial spaceflights.’

It will highlight how Italy’s strategic vision and international collaborations are paving the way for transformative advancements in space technology, fostering global partnerships, and enabling a new era of exploration and innovation.
